BENTHIC SPECIES OF BRITTANY

At the ITRS – International Temperate Reefs Symposium – scientific conference in Brest, organized by IFREMER, a collaborative work highlighting temperate reefs was created with the 380 researchers present.

COLLABORATIVE WORK

Each researcher selected a species that they presented at the symposium, then the artist (Estelle Cruz) redrew it on a primed background reflecting the color ranges of temperate reefs .

SEEING LIFE THROUGH SCIENTIFIC DRAWING

This work is part of a broader research-creation project at the interface of arts and sciences . Temperate reefs, less well-known than tropical coral reefs, cover a significant portion of the coastal seabed between 30° and 60° latitude. They harbor rich biodiversity—from oyster reefs to kelp forests—and play a key role in coastal protection and climate regulation through carbon capture and storage.

ART FOR BIODIVERSITY

Drawing the diversity of species in these reefs helps to make visible their shapes and colours, as well as their ecological and scientific importance, which is little known to the general public.

The original works are being sold by the ADN gallery in Rouen – specializing in artists committed to the environment.

50% of the sales revenue is donated to the Bretagne Vivante association .
